Synopsis of Photo Essay

PHOTO ESSAY – Synopsis

Title: Starin’ at the world through my rearview.

The theme of my photo essay was a series of pictures taken from the passenger seat of a car while driving through the city. By inserting different political images and images of current events into the rear view mirror, I suggest that although we are focusing on what is on the road ahead of us, what is in the news and tragedies throughout the world are always in the back of peoples minds.

To further illustrate this I have de-saturated the colour in the city images to bring out the colour in the mirror images. This drawing peoples attention to the essays central theme, which is what is reflected in the mirror e.g. 9-11, the Iraq war and the Tsunami etc.

Photo Essay - Final concept

Had an idea to insert unrelated images in the rearview mirror as a substitute for the real reflection. These images will represent the thoughts of the person in the car or what is in the back of that persons mind.

This was a sample of one of my ideas i chose not to use, The idea was to add images of old-fashioned people or objects to reflect the time the buildings were built.

However decided this concept was not as strong as others.

Sidney Nolan

Went to the Ian Potter Gallery last Sunday.

Liked the Ned Kelly painting series and the series of paintings of a riverbed.

However, thought overall that many of his paintings had too much detail and therefore made for bad compositions.

Probably preferred the exhibition of last yeras VCE student artworks and photography.

A few photos and ideas for photo essay

Starting taking a few photos. The first idea I had is photos from the perspective of a passenger in a car while driving through the city.

The second idea is simalar but the images were taken in a carpark.

My final idea is to focus on 4 different city buildings from different eras of Melbournes history and having each one represent a theme. eg. The Orica building would represent buisness and technology.

Especially like the use of bright colours and the composition of the images.
